Historic Paige Building to be Saved
by Sherry and Warren Johnson
The original “Warner/Mixter” store was built in 1740 by Jonathan Warner, one year after the incorporation of the town of Hardwick. His son, General Jonathan Warner, assumed those duties after his father’s passing in 1763. Jason Mixter, son of Samuel and Elizabeth Mixter of New Braintree was apprenticed to the Warners at 16 years of age in 1788. Jason would continue the operation for many years, becoming the most affluent man in Hardwick, where subsequent members of his family would also have involvement in the exchange. The Mixter families played significant roles in agriculture, town and state politics and major philanthropic efforts for Hardwick.
Commonly known as the Paige Building, it was home of the Hardwick Farmers’ Cooperative Exchange from 1914 -1974. After this time period the building was used for the Hardwick Fair, Scouting, 4-H and other community groups.
What is the plan?
A non-profit group has been formed by citizen volunteers of Hardwick to purchase and completely restore the original Warner/ Mixter store, (the Paige building).
When restored, it is the desire of the “PAIGE BUILDING FRIENDS” (PBF) to provide space for the purposes of agriculture, education, history and community use.
Once the town has finalized the transfer of ownership to the PBF, more information on timing and how you can help will be forthcoming.
