<image:title>News & Updates - THE BEGINNING OF A TOWN CALLED HARDWICK </image:title>
<image:caption>Captain Samuel Ruggles Jr.’s son, Reverend Timothy Ruggles, was born in 1685 in Roxbury, graduated from Harvard College in 1707, and was ordained pastor of the church in Rochester, Massachusetts Bay colony. He held a high rank in the ministry and was preeminently a man of business. Reverend Timothy was more active and efficient than any other individual in promoting the settlement of Hardwick. Through his influence and exertions, six sons and a daughter of his own family, five sons and a daughter of his sister Patience, wife of James Robinson, and many members of his parish were among the early settlers of Hardwick. On behalf of the proprietors, he visited the town several times, arranging the financial affairs of the people and ministering to their spiritual wants.</image:caption>

<image:title>Virtual Common Tour - The Brick Schoolhouse - Built Circa 1830</image:title>
<image:caption>Originally known as District One School and built circa 1830, it was once part of a network of 10 schoolhouses throughout the town. Earlier schools had met in private homes where the lady of the house was the teacher. This gabled structure is built on a solid granite foundation, with a side entrance and transom windows over the doorway. Inside, two major rooms open off a center hallway, with a smaller enclosure, probably the schoolmaster's office, at the end.</image:caption>

<image:title>Virtual Common Tour - The Universalist Church</image:title>
<image:caption>The site selection in 1741 set the pattern for clustering major town buildings around a common area, but a church was not completed here until 1770. It was funded by selling pews while the town would pay the cost of the steeple. That steeple toppled during the 1938 hurricane and was replaced in 1941, funded by donations and other monies. At first, the church stood alone overlooking a grassy plain until 1828, when theological disagreement splintered the church. With two churches, parish membership had declined, so the 18th-century building was replaced with this smaller structure. Its exterior is similar to the Town House, but four years earlier.</image:caption>

<image:title>Virtual Common Tour - The Paige Memorial Library - Hardwick’s Paige Memorial Library was built in 1909.</image:title>
<image:caption>Across the road and a few steps to the north of the Universalist Church stands the Paige Memorial Library, another Classical Revival municipal building. It was built in 1909 on the footprint of Hardwick High School, which preceded this building on this site but was destroyed by fire. Its design follows an "L" pattern with a small entry leading to an octagonal reception area with a circulation desk and file materials. Side wings lead to a reading room and stacks, plus offices. The library concept began in 1881 with one room in a nearby commercial building, then owned by Hon. William Mixter, who donated the space. In 1888, Lucius Paige read his will at the Town's 150th anniversary celebration, which promised the Town his private library of 2,000 volumes plus $10,000 to maintain the library with two conditions. It must be named Paige Library to honor his ancestors and be located within one mile of the common. The town library had been moved to the then-high school, but people worried the designated room was not fireproof. Their concerns were verified when the building burned in 1905, and the entire collection was lost. This building, the first in Hardwick to be built exclusively for a library, is indeed fireproof. Marble mosaic floors, a dome skylight, a handsome fireplace, and period chandeliers complete its magnificent interior. Exterior landscaping included benches, a historic beech tree, and flowering bulbs.</image:caption>

<image:title>Virtual Common Tour - The General Store and Post Office - The General Store and Post Office was built in 1896 by Herbert Emmons, who bought the lot from Frazier Paige. This building is the most recent commercial structure on the common.</image:title>
<image:caption>Mr. Emmons had been a clerk and postmaster in neighboring stores since 1892. In 1897, he became the agent for the Barre Domestic and Custom Laundry, and in 1900, he extended the building to accommodate the post office. The laundry agency is long gone, but the post office remains and is still active. In 1921, Emmons sold the story to Harry Bingham, who celebrated 25 years of ownership in 1946. Two years later, he sold it and the post office to Lorenzo Blackmer. Wayne and Ruth Goddard owned and ran the post office and store from 1953 until 1985 when Robert and Jean McLean bought it. Since 2000 there have been a number of owners and the general store section has become an eatery. Now known as Mimi’s Coffeehouse, it is a wonderful community-gathering spot right on the Hardwick Common.</image:caption>

<image:title>Virtual Common Tour - The Calvinistic Congregational Church - Built in 1860</image:title>
<image:caption>This Italianate-style building replaces a brick structure built in 1828 after part of the Congregational Society withdrew from that church. It was built in 1860, patterned after a church in Athol, MA, and designed by the same architect, Elbridge Boyden. Rev. Martyn Tupper became pastor in 1852, and from 1864-1868, he received a gift of $100-$200 in addition to his regular salary. Hardwick had followed an old tradition of levying a "minister tax" based on the town's evaluation. In 1876, church interest surged with a revival of religious fervor when Mr. H.L. Meade was hired for four Sundays, with additional meetings held during the week. Participants felt "blessed with the manifest presence of the Holy Spirit." The twentieth Century brought a reunion of the two churches on Hardwick Common. A formal vote in 1931 established the Community Church of Hardwick with membership from both churches. Each would retain its own funds, but the pastor would serve the whole group with services held for six months in each church.</image:caption>
